Milton Sonday is the foremost researcher of textile techniques, structure, and pattern. Sonday points to his work at The Textile Museum as the beginning of his professional career. Joining as staff artist in 1961, Sonday became a curator and was placed in charge of the rug collection. Over his 30-year tenure with the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, his attuned eye and acute understanding of the myriad ways textiles are made contributed to many extraordinary exhibitions.A talented artist, Sonday uses color-coded isometric diagrams, in the form of drawings or paper-strip constructions to illuminate the structure of cloth. Sonday was also a founding member of the Textile Society of America in 1987 and served as its president, shaping many initial policies.

Named for The Textile Museum’s founder and presented by the Board of Trustees, the George Hewitt Myers Award for lifetime achievement recognizes an individual’s exceptional contributions to the study and understanding of the textile arts. The award is the most distinguished honor in the field of textile arts.
