Tunic
Peru, Northern Andes
Chachapoyas people
1470 -1532

Warp: cotton. Weft: cotton. Plain-weave with supplementary
weft and embroideryThe Textile Museum 1962.6.1.
Tunics
such as this have been found in mummy bundles in the
far Northern Peruvian Andes. Although this piece entered
the Museum's collection in 1962, little was known about
it until archaeologists working in grave sites in 1997
found similar items. The imagery, now known to be typical
of Chachapoyas, must have had ceremonial and protective
associations.
