Carpet fragment
Safavid
Iran
16th century

This fragment comes from the border of a large and splendid carpet dating from the mid-sixteenth century. The quality of materials and workmanship are of the highest order, and the style is that of the court of the Persian Shah Tahmasp Safavi, who reigned from 1524-1576. It was during his reign that the Persian decorative arts reached a pinnacle of excellence which, according to many scholars, has never been surpassed.
