20th century

The Qashqa’i is a large confederation of tribes inhabiting the Fars province in southwestern Iran. They speak a Turkic language and have historically wielded considerable political power in Iran. Qashqa’i women are particularly well known as accomplished weavers who use a variety of techniques to make their carpets, animal trappings, and containers and covers such as these three on view. Their beautiful weavings are noteworthy for the superior quality in the workmanship and the wide range of saturated colors, especially the characteristic rich chocolate brown and the clear moss green, combined with touches of a pastel blue.
