Rug, Turkey, Kayseri, Late 19th-early 20th century

This rug was intentionally woven in this shape, which is unusual, but not extremely rare. The fringe extending from the outer border is the remaining warp yarns. The rug would have served as a floor cover or more likely as a table cover. The main field of the rug is decorated with birds and flowers, possibly representing a garden. The inner border is decorated with boteh motifs, which are often associated with Kashmir and European shawls. Although it was woven in a commercial workshop in Kayseri, in central Turkey, it has certain Persian style elements.
