Takhin, cap
This cap, called a takhin, was constructed from two different shawl materials. The red base fabric is from a shawl woven in Kashmir, while the fabric on the rim of the cap is from Iran. Both regions had competing shawl markets at the time this piece was made. An immense amount of detailed work went into the construction of this takhin. The main part of the cap is made from four triangular pieces of cloth that have been joined together to form a cone. Additionally, these triangular pieces have been quilted with padding between the inner and outer fabrics. The Persian shawl material at the bottom rim has been carefully attached to maintain the slight angle of the pattern. All of the different design components are unified through the cream-colored embroidery, created using a knotted buttonhole stitch.
