In Memoriam: Josephine Powell

2006 Recipient of The Textile Museum's
George Hewitt Myers Award

May 15, 1919 - January 19, 2007

The Textile Museum staff, members and friends were saddened to learn of the passing of Josephine Powell on January 19, 2007 at her home in Istanbul, Turkey.

Ms. Powell, an internationally renowned ethnographer, photographer and expert on nomadic weaving traditions in Turkey, was honored with The Textile Museum's George Hewitt Myers Award in October 2006. Named for The Textile Museum's founder, the award for lifetime achievement recognized her exceptional contributions to the study and understanding of the textile arts.

Upon receiving the news of her death, Museum Director Daniel Walker remarked, "We mourn the passing of this remarkable person and feel incredible gratitude that she had such a rich and full life, and that we were able to share with her our profound appreciation for her life's work through the presentation of the George Hewitt Myers Award this past October. We are also grateful that we have Andrew Finkel's wonderful interview of Josephine in video form, a portion of which was shown at the October event, to remind us of her keen intelligence, humanity and twinkling eye."
