  Volunteer Opportunities

Whether you hope to explore an arts career, expand your horizons, or simply lend a hand, volunteering at The Textile Museum is a wonderful way to become an advocate for the textile arts. Volunteer and internship experiences are available in departments throughout the Museum, including the education department, curatorial departments, conservation, public relations and in the library.

Education Volunteers

Docents
The Textile Museum Docents lead exhibition and highlights tours for adults and conduct school group programs on regular weekdays and occasional weekends. Docents interpret exhibitions for visitors from aesthetic, cultural and technical points of view. Docents make a two-year commitment and attend weekly Thursday morning training and enrichment sessions September through May. Docents are required to be available to lead tours and school programs three hours per week and one weekend afternoon per month, October to May. To apply for a docent position in the education department, complete the docent application and fax it to (202) 483-0994.

Program Volunteers
Program Volunteers assist weekend public programs, including workshops and lectures, and facilitate hands-on activities at family programs, and Celebration of Textiles. Program Volunteers make a one-year commitment, attend periodic training sessions, and are scheduled for a minimum of one weekend day per month.
Education Volunteers are recruited and trained annually in the fall, but applications are accepted year-round. To apply for a volunteer opportunity in the education department, complete the volunteer application and fax it to (202)483-0994.

Administrative Volunteers

Behind-the-Scenes Administrative Volunteers provide general office support, such as preparing program materials, assisting with press and member mailings, and data entry. Schedules and terms of commitment are flexible. Positions are filled as needed throughout the year, and training is provided upon start of term. For more information, contact info@textilemuseum.org.

Library Volunteers

If you enjoy beautifully illustrated and scholarly books about textiles, rugs, costume, and ethnographic cultures and would like to spend some time working in a busy research library, there are opportunities for internships and volunteer positions, both long and short term, available in the Arthur D. Jenkins Library. For more information, call the library at (202) 667-0441, extension 31.

Internships

Textile Museum internships are varied in format and can be tailored to the needs of the intern. Internships are designed to provide real world experience and help interns solidify their career goals. There is no regular schedule for internships which are organized on an as-needed basis by department. For more information, click here.
